The Defend London's NHS Rally will be at Hammersmith Town Hall on Tuesday (March 10)
Campaigners will descend on Hammersmith next week in a rally against changes to the NHS.
Londoners from all over the capital are set to join the Defend London’s NHS rally on Tuesday (March 10) evening, where politicians and doctors are set to speak about why they believe the NHS should not change.
Government cutbacks have meant big alterations to the NHS, which have included the closure of A&Es at Hammersmith and Central Middlesex Hospitals in west London.
The coalition argue they are changing the way healthcare is looked at, by focusing on prevention to relieve the country’s heaving A&Es, but opponents claim they are privatising the service at the cost of patients' welfare.
The rally is being led by London Keep Our NHS Public and hosted by Save Our Hospitals (Hammersmith and Charing Cross) but will be attended by campaigners from 37 other groups and unions as well as 25 MPs, politicians and medical professionals.
Andy Slaughter, Hammersmith MP and founder of Save Our Hospitals, said: “West London hospital services are in turmoil because of chaotic cuts and closures, while my constituents have to face overflowing A&Es, GP surgeries under threat of closure and a London Ambulance Service on its knees.
“Labour will safeguard communities by overturning the coalition’s privatisation drive and avoid another costly and damaging top down reorganisation. We have pledged to repeal the disastrous Health & Social Care Act and keep the National in the NHS - for all of our sakes.”
Dr Jackie Turner, from Save Our Surgeries campaign group, added: “Our publicly funded and provided NHS is the most cost effective health care system in the developed world, it does not need re-organising or the involvement of the private sector.
"General Practice is the bedrock of the NHS yet the Government undermine it at every step. Save Our Surgeries will continue to fight for fair and adequate funding for General Practice and indeed the whole of the NHS.”
The Defend London’s NHS rally will gather on Tuesday (March 10) at 7pm outside Hammersmith Town Hall before speeches in the Main Hall at 7.30pm.
